Press release 27 August 2025
Foamit Group, Glava and Stena Recycling collaborate on glass wool recycling
Partnera's subsidiary Foamit Group is launching a pilot project in which offcuts from Glava's factory and construction sites will be recycled and used as raw material in foam glass production. The collaboration between Foamit Group's Norwegian subsidiary Glasopor and Saint Gobain's subsidiary Glava began with a research and development project. Stena Recycling joined the collaboration later. Through the joint project, the partners have developed a process for the cost-effective recycling of glass wool.
Glass wool waste still ends up in landfills today, as the recycling method used so far consumes a lot of energy. Transporting it to landfills also incurs costs and is not in line with sustainable development.
The newly developed process enables energy-efficient recycling and use of glass wool as a raw material for foam glass, while ensuring that the Glasopor end product retains its quality and required properties. The properties of foam glass containing recycled glass wool have been tested and the results have been verified by the Norwegian research institute SINTEF.
Less landfill waste
Glasopor’s production will start with a pilot project, and all parties have already begun the necessary preparations. Full-scale recycling operations will begin in the spring of 2026. After processing, Glava's offcuts will be delivered to the Glasopor production plant to be used as raw material for foam glass. Similarly, Stena Recycling will process external glass wool waste, including pre- and post-consumer glass wool from construction sites before being forwarded to Glasopor.
The amount of recyclable glass wool will initially be just over 1,000 tons per year, but over time this could rise to as much as 3,500 tons.
"Partnera supports Foamit Group's aim to reach a revenue of EUR 100 million and EBITDA level of over 20% by the end of 2028. This requires investing in the factories in Finland, Sweden and Norway as well as incorporating new recycling processes and material flows into the value chain. The use of glass wool as a raw material will enable Foamit to continue to grow, which Partnera will support through its investments in the development of Foamit Group's production," Jussi Lappalainen, Interim CEO of Partnera, says.
The core of our business
"Through a joint and pioneering research and development project with Glava, we found a way to process and utilise recycled glass wool. We are now starting to invest in the recycling of thousands of tonnes of glass wool waste every year. Once again, we are proving that recycling and sustainability are at the heart of our business," says Valtteri Raunio, Interim CEO of Foamit Group.
Glava and Stena Recycling are also satisfied with the results of the collaboration: "For Glava, the partnership with Glasopor and Stena is an important step in becoming circular manufacturer. The demand for products that help reduce waste and environmental emission has increased significantly in recent years. We’re pleased to do this together with Glasopor and Stena and look forward to a strong collaboration," says Daniel Jällfält, Business Development Manager Circularity, Saint-Gobain Nordic & Baltic.
