Foamit supplies foam glass for a major project in Turku

A new seaside residential area, Pihlajaniemi, is currently under construction to the south of Turku city centre. The ground reinforcement work for the MRU1 contract is nearing completion, and construction of streets and municipal infrastructure is underway. According to the plans, residential construction will begin in the spring of 2026. Upon completion, the area will offer accommodation for around 5,000 residents.

Foam glass, manufactured from recycled glass, is utilized in street construction and for lightening street foundations. Foamit has agreed with the contractor, Oteran Oy, to deliver approximately 15,000 m3 of foam glass to Pihlajaniemi. Deliveries from Foamit’s production facility in Forssa are scheduled to commence during the current year and will continue until the end of 2026.

100 percent circular economy product

Foamit foam glass is an ideal solution to use as a lightening and insulating material for streets due to its functionality and environmental properties. Foam glass is a 100 percent circular economy product, which is easier to transport, and handle compared to crushed stone due to its light weight.

“Foamit foam glass is suitable to use as a lightweight structure, and we chose it because of its competitive price,” says Markus Rosten, Planning Manager of Oteran.

Foamit’s production is increasing

Foamit is developing its production in all its operating countries, i.e. Finland, Sweden, and Norway. During this year, the company has increased its total production capacity for foam glass by approximately 20 percent. Furthermore, efforts are currently underway to increase the production capacity of small foam glass fractions at Foamit’s production facility in Forssa.
